Founded in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization dedicated to providing a nationwide community for those impacted by suicide. Through research, education, and advocacy, AFSP empowers individuals to take meaningful action against this critical public health issue.
Committed to saving lives and offering hope to those affected by suicide, including survivors of loss, AFSP fosters a culture that prioritizes mental health awareness. Its mission is carried out through key initiatives:
- Funding scientific research
- Educating the public on mental health and suicide prevention
- Advocating for policies that support mental health and suicide prevention
- Providing resources and support for survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide
Under the leadership of CEO Robert Gebbia, AFSP is headquartered in New York, with an advocacy and policy office in Washington, DC. With local chapters in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico, AFSP offers programs and events that create connection, education, and support nationwide.
